What Bay Head does to a window
Bay Head and Mantoloking are the saltiest glass on our Spring Lake routes. The oceanfront houses along East Avenue in Bay Head and Ocean Avenue in Mantoloking take spray straight off the Atlantic on every east wind and dry a white film within days of a cleaning, and a nor'easter carries it clear across Route 35 to the bay side, where the homes on Barnegat Bay take a second dose of brackish haze and an exhaust film off the boat traffic. On the sun side the film bakes on, and once it bakes it starts to etch.
The sand and the wind are the second problem. The island is a few hundred yards wide here, and blowing sand scratches the lower panes and piles in the sliding-door tracks on every windy afternoon, heaviest in the fall and winter nor'easter season. In winter Route 35 is brined before every storm, and the spray off passing traffic dries into a white crust on the lower glass of homes near the road. The old wood sash windows on the big shingled houses sweat on cold mornings and hold salt between the storm panes, and the humid summer grows mildew inside the porch screens.
Most Bay Head and Mantoloking homes do best on an every-two-months plan, and oceanfront glass usually wants monthly from October through April when the wind is up. Many of these houses sit closed for weeks in the off-season, which is exactly when salt film does the most damage, so we keep the schedule running year-round on any mild day.
